General Requirements for Flexible Paving of Clay Bricks
This text is included as general guidance for designers, supervisors and contractors associated with the use of clay paving bricks as the surface course of a structural paving system. It is not intended to cover all possible modes of paving construction or standardised specifications for materials, design and application such as BS 6677 'Clay and calcium silicate pavers for flexible pavements' Part 1, 2 and 3 or others. It should only be used in association with the relevant contract specification for paving bricks.
Satisfactory long-term performance of flexible pavements depends upon the following factors:
- An adequate sub-base and sand bedding course
- A suitable selection of pavers and bond pattern
- Adequate edge restraint detailing to keep the pavers interlocked
- Satisfactory drainage profiles in the wearing face
- Adequate execution of the work including joint filling and compaction
