Drainage
Water should drain easily from the paving surface. It is therefore essential that a cross-fall should be adopted, since all water cannot be drained through the pavement to the sub-grade. For roads, a cross-fall of 1:35 is recommended whereas for squares, 1:50 is normally satisfactory. Longitudinal gradients on roads are not to be less than 1:100 where practicable. To the sides of the roads, the water should flow to pits, while on squares there must be a system of gullies which lead the water to the pits.
