Introduction
Mortar is the plastic jointing and bedding matrix between bricks. It helps to distribute the load, make the joints water tight and unite the bricks. Most mortars are composed of a ratio of cement and sand to which water is added and sometimes lime is introduced for extra plasticity. It is important that the mortar mix is suitable for the application. During construction, you will require good workability characteristics from your mortar. It must be cohesive - clinging to the trowel - it must spread easily and stick to bricks. It must also stay workable for a reasonable period in bulk but set quickly when placed between bricks to allow good progress of work. Your choice of mortar is dependant on a number of conditions.
Safety Note
It is important to note that lime is a corrosive substance and as a result, care should be taken when working with mortar. Prolonged contact with skin or eyes can cause serious burns.
