Checking Materials
For bricks, check delivery tickets and certificates against the specifications or orders as soon as the materials arrive, and in particular that:
- The consignment is of the correct brick type, size and quantity.
- The bricks are within the specified limits of size. If there is any doubt, inform the supplier immediately.
- Any colour variation is within the acceptable limits, particularly if the consignment includes bricks of special shapes. If there is any doubt, inform the supplier immediately.
- Any minor blemishes, such as chips, surface cracks or scuffs to facing bricks are within acceptable limits.
Ensure that the cement and lime that you are using is of the type specified and that there is a consistent supply.
Check that your sand is clean and, if for use in facework, from a consistent source. Check that it is certified to be as specified.
Check that the delivery documents for premixed lime/sand and ready-to-use retarded mortars refer to the mortar as ordered and visually check for colour consistency.
Ensure that the damp-proof course material type, width, weight or thickness and any standard and special pre-formed cavity units are as specified.
Check that wall ties are the length, shape and material specified.
