Consistency of Bond Pattern
Buildings should be designed according to the brick dimensions: this is especially true of piers and short runs which should be carefully set out on the site. A thorough understanding of the dimensional limits and constraints of the brickwork leads to consistency of the bond pattern. Specific dimensions apply to brickwork and any variations will inevitably lead to the need to cut bricks and broken bonding which will cause disruption to the otherwise regular jointing patterns.
Before the work commences, drawing should be checked, in particular for short critical dimensions, and then correct setting out should be checked by the supervisor responsible.
If cutting is required, then thought should be applied to ensure that the cut piece is placed in an inconspicuous part of the wall. In these circumstances it is as well to bear in mind that a cut brick of 3/4 size is not too conspicuous in the finished work, whereas less than 3/4 size will not disrupt bond pattern.
